SHE deserved a CHANCE and they KNEW it!

This horrible disease of cancer suddenly crept up on my mother this past November and has rocked her into a life of hospitalizations and uncomfortable living. After her initial diagnosis, she underwent treatment and was able to become a Miraculous testimony. Shortly after radiation was completed she took ill to the point of being bed ridden. This (which was the 4th hospitalization) occurred at Einstein Hospital, at 1825 Eastchester Road. After not wanting to go back to Jacobi, due to the treatment there, Einstein was basically our last hope at mommy receiving quality care. Our guts were RIGHT! From the entrance into the ER, Dr. Reister, who was to be her intern, Dr. Berger, who was her initial attending (and is the Director of Medicine) showed her intense care, compassion and treated her with the utmost dignity and respect.

Once the nursing began, I was completely impressed with several that rose way above the call of duty to make sure that my mother was as comfortable as could be. Those nurses who had so many strengths and beautiful skills to offer on that 10 South unit of the Einstein -Weiler (now Montifiore division) are Vanessa, Barbara, Ed, Jennifer (Carter...there are two Jennifer's), Maria (I am so saddened to not remember her last name because there are two as well, but this Maria loves football the way I do, so I hope that she gets the recognition that I am trying to share with her) and Steve. If there was ever a medication issue, they were very responsive and willing to call in the doctor if necessary. They wanted to make sure everything was right as much as my sister and I, who stayed with our mom 24/7 did as well! Hands down this team held my mothers wishes and concerns as priorities when dealing with her. The level of care and compassion couldn't have been higher!

The team of nursing attendants who also kept my mother in high regards was outstanding as well! Jacqueline, Earlina, Ena and Khadija were all very kind and gentle with my mom. When it came to caring for her body, making sure that he vitals were taken on time and reported to the necessary people, these guys made it all happen. My sister and I could not have asked for a better set of circumstances for the very trying times. Mommy is still here at the hospital after being admitted on December 26, 2011. We have been trying to find adequate placement for her over the last two weeks and the social worker, Fulaki( I sincerely hope I am spelling everyone's name correctly) put in so much time and effort into trying to get mommy placed and work on her discharge planning. She has also spent time trying to make sure that not only mommy's needs were met, but that my sister and I (mommy's only children) were ok as well. And it doesn't even stop there!

The nutrition staff, Zilia, in particular always made sure that mommy's food and nutrition needs were being as met as they could be! She made sure that my sister and I were also taken care of, since we spent 24 hours a day at the hospital.

To back track, the director of the E.R., Corey was outstanding as well. Mommy had been in the ER for nearly two days and the transport was somehow confused and the last nurse that she had in the ER flubbed up the paperwork some sort of way. Mommy being in a very critical state at that time propelled me to have to speak with whoever was in charge at the moment. He immediately saw to it that my mother was moved out of the hallway, where she was placed to make room in the already OVERCROWDED ER for a patient that was very stable and in fact, did not have such an acute or emergency situation happening. Not only did he keep his word that my ailing mother, with an already cancer ridden compromised immune system would be moved from the germ infested hallway where everyone had to pass by, but he personally gathered one of his staff and escorted my mother to 10 south, where she is still a patient.

Security has been wonderful too. Given the fact that visiting hours are 12-8:30, they have always shown my sister and I care and compassion when entering and exiting the hospital at all hours of the day and night!

There was an incident where I believed that mommy's phone had been tossed away with her sheets...frantic I ran down to the first floor where the shute for all dirty linens are tossed to find that there were hundreds of bags waiting to be picked up. Earl and his WONDERFUL staff helped me go through over 60 bags to turn up no phone. Once that was done I HAD to run to pick up my daughter, they went through hundreds of bags to help!!!

Had it not been for the substantial care and concern of these folks, perhaps that original prognosis of 24-48 hours on 12-26-11 would have been her fate. These days her body continues to deteriorate but her soul is strong. Again I want to thank all of the wonderful staff at Einstein Weiler Hospital (a Montifiore Division now) and those who received a personal mention in this review to be applauded and given a STANDING ovation!!
